Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson Seeks Funding for Transportation Projects
In May, Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson visited Congressman Joe Wilson to ask for his support of transportation projects in Richland County to better serve all citizens.
Councilwoman Dickerson is working with Congressman Wilson to submit a request to include Richland County transportation projects in the Federal Reauthorization Congressional Transportation Bill that could help partially fund the estimated 79 million dollar Hardscrabble Road Widening project.

Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson attended the National Foundation of Women Legislators
Conference from November 20-24, 2008 in Sarasota, Florida
The NFWL Celebrated its 70th Anniversary during the conference and featured guest speakers such
as Mignon Clyburn and Michelle Stafford, from “The Young and the Restless,” who spoke about her
advocacy on advertised prescription drugs policy.
During the Conference, Ms. Dickerson was elected to serve as the South East Regional Chair
while State Representative Joan Brady was elected State Director, a post formally held by Ms. Dickerson.

On Saturday, August 16, 2008, Ms. Dickerson had the opportunity to participate in WAL*MART FWL Tour hosted by
the Capital City Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board head by Miriam Atria. FLW Outdoors Forrest Wood Cup
on Lake Murray and in Columbia, SC - August 14-17, 2008.
According to Ms. Dickerson, “it was an exciting event to help build and sustain community, city and county
relations. As you can see what I started out looking like and after the end of a three (3) hour fishing
extravaganza I was a mess (smile). I had the pleasure to fish with Angler Jerry Green of Cullman Alabama
and Daniel Rickeman of the City of Columbia. We were later joined by Sam Davis who missed the first boat.

Joins 3,000 county official at NACo Annual Conference in Kansas City Mo.
KANSAS CITY, MO, Joyce Dickerson of Richland County Council participated in the National Association of Counties’ (NACo)
73rd Annual Conference and Exposition in Jackson County, Mo. and pledge to work to help “Restore the Partnership” between
The White House, Congress and counties.
The conference was held July 11-15 in the Kansas City Convention Center. More than 3,000 elected and appointed county
officials representing nearly every state and the District of Columbia adopted resolutions on national issues facing
counties – such as emergency preparedness, infrastructure funding and access to healthcare – and (I) participated
in educational seminars and workshops to strengthen their (my) public service skills.
DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE IN NACo- I am a member of the Women of NACo (WON) and have been sense March 2006 when we pledge
allegiance with The National Foundation of Legislative Women (NFLW) to include women on the local level of
government. In addition, I am also a member of the National Association of Black Elected official affiliated.
I was elected Regional Director at-large for the Southeast Region. I have asked the newly elected President
Don Stapley about serving on the newly formed national task force and the transportation steering committee.

Groundbreaking to Mark Growth for Columbia Toyota Dealer
Columbia, SC— Fueled by increased sales in 2008 and expectations of substantial growth throughout 2009, Dick Dyer Toyota of Columbia will officially break ground on its new 64,000 sq. foot dealership on Aug. 12. The ceremony will take place at their new site on Killian Commons Parkway.
The automotive dealer has retained the services of Choate Construction Company of Charleston and McCreary/Snow Architects of Columbia to construct the facility, which is scheduled for completion summer 2009. The new dealership is expected to bring over 100 additional new jobs to the Columbia area.
The latest Toyota and Scion line-ups will be showcased to customers both on the lot and within the four car showroom at the new facility. Customers can expect to rest comfortably while purchasing vehicles in the customer lounge area with adjacent refreshment bar while children are entertained in the kid’s play area. In order to continue providing superior service and maintenance, the new facility will also be equipped with a 42 car service center and an express service area incorporating the latest cutting edge equipment and tools. Other features of the facility include 14 offices for managers and sales personnel, reception areas, multiple wash bays and a detached car wash. A second floor mezzanine will house the General Manager's office and will overlook the show room floor.

Councilwoman Celebrates “National Night Out” with Residents of Bonnie Forest
Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson joined members of the Bonnie Forest Community as they took a stand for their neighborhood during the “25th annual National Night Out” celebration on August 5, 2008.
National Night Out is a unique crime and drug prevention event that involves citizens, law enforcement, civic groups and neighborhood organizations from more than 10,000 communities nationwide.

Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson was the guest of honor at Columbia High School’s recent “Night Under the Stars” Fashion Show on May 14, 2007. The fashion show featured costumes in several categories like “Rock Star”, “Hip Hop Urban”, “Business Attire”, and “Formal Wear”.
 
AAUW Greater Columbia honors Richland County Councilwoman at annual awards luncheon
Columbia, SC: The American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Greater Columbia will recognize the contributions of Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson during its annual Awards Luncheon on Saturday, May 17, 12:00 NOON
- 2:00 P.M., at the New Orleans River Front Restaurant, 121 Alexander Road, West Columbia.
In her first term on Richland County Council, Dickerson has distinguished herself with tireless service to the community. Elected South Carolina State Director of the National Foundation for Women Legislators in 2007, Dickerson has been an inspiration to women of all ages to become involved in the political process. In recognition of her efforts, the branch will present her with its Named Gift Honor in support of the AAUW Educational Foundation. Mrs. Dickerson will also address the group about her political career and the mentoring she provides to women who want to enter the political arena.
In addition, the branch will present its first branch scholarship to a woman furthering her education by reentering an accredited college or university.
The AAUW Greater Columbia Branch Scholarship provides funds specifically for women over 30 for whom financial resources are limited.

Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson participates in Columbia High School’s 1st Annual Spirit Cluster Fest on Saturday,
April 12th 2008.
Ms. Dickerson said that the coaches, the community, the faculty, and staff did a fabulous job highlighting the school and all that it has to offer. Ms. Dickerson
particularly enjoyed the Sigma Alpha Mu step team of St. Andrews Middle School who placed first during an earlier competition at Lower Richland High School.
Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson to Host Budget Forum Meeting for District 2 Residents
Monday, March 17
Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson invites residents to attend the District 2 Budget Forum Meeting on Monday, March 17 from 6-8pm at Longleaf Middle
School.
The meeting will allow residents to learn the budget process and receive a breakdown in how tax dollars are spend (i.e. public safety, school system, etc.)
Richland County is currently in the process of preparing for the 08/09 fiscal budget.

Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson Joins the Fight Against Heart Disease
Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson is donning a red dress for a good cause. Dickerson was recently named an ambassador for the American Heart Association’s Red Dress Campaign against heart disease; raising $1,000 dollars for the effort.
In February, Dickerson also hosted a Red Dress Campaign event with guest speaker Kristin Armstrong; former wife of world famous cyclist Lance Armstrong, the program was entitled “Take Time for Your Heart”.
Heart disease is a serious health concern here in S.C., in fact recent reports show cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, is South Carolina’s leading killer of women among all racial and ethnic groups.
Councilwoman Dickerson hopes that the money she raised for the Red Dress Campaign will be used to highlight the health of women and making sure that we all recognized the importance of having a healthy heart
Ms. Dickerson’s check is being presented to Providence Hospital Sisters of Charity in recognition for February being designated healthy hearts month.
Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson Attends National Association of Counties Conference

During the convention, Dickerson, participated in several workshops and roundtable discussions dealing with several environmental issues including greenhouse gases, air and water quality. Another highlight at the conference was drug awareness, finance and intergovernmental affairs, and the Cool Counties initiative.
Ms. Dickerson is an active member of the Women of NACo, and an active member of NABCo.

Blythewood Bengal’s Football Team Honored by County Council
Richland County Council honored the Blythewood High School Bengal Football team for their outstanding achievement of going 10-0 in the 2007 season.
Twenty-four seniors were on the undefeated team and received special trophies to remember the historic season.
The team was not permitted to play in post-season play due to illegal practices held during training.
The Bengal’s won the Class AAA State Championship in 2006.
 
Councilwoman Dickerson Elected NFWL State Director for South Carolina
WASHINGTON, D.C.– South Carolina State Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson was elected South Carolina State Director of the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) at the 2007 NFWL Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
By accepting the State Director position, Councilwoman Dickerson takes on liaison and communications responsibilities between women elected officials in South Carolina and their counterparts across the nation.
“I am honored that the members of NFWL have asked me to serve as their representative in South Carolina for this next year and thrilled to have the opportunity to build relationships,” said Dickerson. She added, “I have already used many important connections that I made at the 2007 Annual Conference and I look forward to working with my colleagues in the legislature on the important public policy issues that were discussed in Kentucky.”

Councilwoman and Sheriff’s Department Partner to Promote Community Safety
On Monday, October 8, 2007, Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson and Sheriff Leon Lott will host a press conference at 12 p.m. on the corner of Coco and Cunningham Road in the Pine Valley/Kingswood subdivision; to announce the establishment of twelve new neighborhood crime watch communities.
The participating communities are: Pine Valley/Kingswood, Emerald Valley, Homewood Terrace, Bonnie Forest, Willow Lakes, Timbervale, Ashley Ridge, Holly Ridge, Chartwell, The Highlands, Cedar Creek Community and Round Top Sandhill Community.
To applaud the commitment from these communities, Ms. Dickerson has purchased 40 crime watch signs to be displayed throughout each community.
The Sheriff’s Department’s Community Action Team has held community meetings to teach citizens about the importance of the program.
The neighborhood crime watch program is designed to educate the citizens on how to protect and advocate for themselves and to report suspicious activity to the Sheriff’s Department.
Ms. Dickerson represents District Two, which includes Blythewood, Cedar Creek and St. Andrews.

Richland County Councilwoman Dickerson Hosts Community Meeting
Thursday Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson brings the community together to discuss concerns in the St. Andrews and
Broad River Roads area.
Richland County staff shall be on hand to answer citizen questions. In addition information about the new Richland County
Prescription Discount Card shall be available.
The meeting will be held Thursday, July 27th, at 6:00 PM, in the auditorium of Columbia High School, 1701 Westchester Drive.

Ms. Dickerson is an ardent supporter of education. “I want to make certain that our teachers have the tools and technology
they need to teach our children well”, she says. Ms. Dickerson has been extremely active in the community for more than twenty
five years and she sees being elected to Richland County Council as a tremendous opportunity. She welcomes the chance to serve
the entire population of Richland County.
Ms. Dickerson graduated Cum Laude from Benedict College, having earned a B.A. Degree in Business Administration and Management,
with a concentration in accounting. She also earned and Associate in Arts Degree in English and Math from Midlands Technical College.
Ms. Dickerson brings a wealth of professional experience to Council. She has been a small business owner, legal secretary, and tax preparer.
She currently works as a Quality Assurance Auditor, a position in which she is responsible for managing and monitoring the performances
of more than sixty employees.
