Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What is the process once documents are received? Once the documents are received from cashiering, they are scanned, indexed and then proofed. Then, after they are microfilmed, they are sent to the mail room to be returned.
  2. What is the turn around time? The goal is one day for scanning, two days for indexing, and three days for proofing. The turn-around time for mail out is between three to four weeks.
  3. How many witnesses are required on most of the legal documents we record? Two witnesses and a notary are required. (The notary can serve as one of the witnesses.)
  4. Where do I get a list of "tax sales" property? Contact the Treasurer's Office at 576-2250.
  5. Where do I go to get a copy of my plat? If your plat has been recorded, it will be located in the Register of Deeds Office and may be copied for a fee. Since there is not a plat recorded for every deed, some properties will not have a plat.
  6. How much does it cost to file this? Please see our fee schedule located on the RoD website. There is a main link to the fee schedule on the main website for the Register of Deeds Office.
  7. My credit report says "Tax Lien - Richland County". Why did Richland County report non-payment of income or sales tax to the credit reporting companies? The SC Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service place liens against those individuals who do not pay their income tax or sales tax. The credit reporting companies search our records for these liens and place them on credit reports. In order to get a lien shown as satisfied on RoD records, the Department of Revenue or the IRS must send a "satisfaction notice" to this office; otherwise the lien remains on record. This satisfaction, however, does not automatically remove the lien from the credit report. Either the credit reporting company will find the satisfaction when it comes to search the records again or the citizen can obtain a copy of the satisfaction and send it to the reporting company.
